ABOUT THE AREA

Local knowledge

Reston is a planned community built around village centers such as Lake Anne and Reston Town Center, now tied into the region by two Silver Line Metro stations. Because it was planned in phases across six decades, no two streets have quite the same housing, and that shows up directly in the technical work.

Multi-level townhouses are the most common challenge. Four floors with the internet line arriving in the garage or basement means the top-floor bedroom is as far from the equipment as it is possible to be inside one home. Vertical coverage behaves differently from horizontal coverage, and the usual fix is a second access point one or two floors up, wired back where possible.

The high-rise condos around Town Center bring the density problem instead: many networks in a small space, competing for the same channels, plus concrete construction that stops signal dead. Here the answer is rarely more power and usually better placement and channel selection.

The original Lake Anne-era homes are a third case again, with the wiring realities of their age and, in some cases, architectural choices that are unhelpful for radio waves.

Small companies around Reston Town Center form the other half of the work. Their needs are usually a professional email setup on their own domain, a network that separates staff from guests, and documentation of how it all fits together so the business is not dependent on one person’s memory.
