ABOUT THE AREA

Local knowledge

Fairfax Station is a quiet, wooded part of Fairfax County near Burke Lake and Fountainhead Regional Park, known for its historic railroad museum and the larger lots in neighborhoods such as Crosspointe. The defining technical fact about the area is simply distance, both across a property and inside the house.

These are big homes, often on two or three levels with a finished basement, and frequently spread horizontally rather than stacked. A router sitting where the internet line enters, usually a basement or garage corner, is being asked to cover a footprint it was never specified for. The result is the pattern people describe as their internet being fine downstairs and useless in the bonus room over the garage.

A single high-end router will not fix that, and buying a more expensive one is the most common wasted purchase here. What works is more than one broadcast point, placed with the floor plan in mind, ideally connected back by wire rather than relaying wirelessly. A wireless mesh node that has to talk to the router through two exterior-grade walls loses most of its usable throughput before it reaches you.

Outdoor coverage comes up regularly too. Back decks, detached garages, pool areas and workshops are all places people now expect a connection, and all places a house-centered network stops short of.

Where the wiring runs matter, the basement ceiling in these homes is usually accessible, which makes a clean wired installation far less disruptive than homeowners expect.
